Recent Results of Point Source Searches with the IceCube Neutrino Telescope
نویسنده
چکیده
IceCube is a km scale neutrino detector being constructed deep in the Antarctic ice. When complete, IceCube will consist of 4800 optical modules deployed on 80 strings between 1450 and 2450 m of depth. During the 2007-2008 data taking season, 22 strings were operational. This configuration is already much larger than previous neutrino telescopes and provides better sensitivity to point sources of high energy (>1 TeV) neutrino emission. Such astrophysical objects are leading candidates for the acceleration of cosmic rays. We describe the IceCube detector and present the methods and results of several recent searches for steady (e.g. AGN) and transient (GRB) point sources.

Getting there: from AMANDA to IceCube
AMANDA is a neutrino telescope consisting of 677 optical modules embedded at 1.5-2 km depth in the ice cap under the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station. In this contribution we summarize AMANDA results on measuring the atmospheric neutrino spectrum, on searches for a neutrino flux from the galactic plane, for a diffuse and point-like flux of cosmic high energy neutrinos and searches for dark mat...
متن کاملSearches for High-energy Neutrino Emission in the Galaxy with the Combined Icecube-amanda Detector
We report on searches for neutrino sources at energies above 200 GeV in the Northern sky of the galactic plane, using the data collected by the South Pole neutrino telescope IceCube and AMANDA. The galactic region considered in this work includes the Local Arm towards the Cygnus region and our closest approach to the Perseus Arm. The searches are based on the data collected between 2007 and 200...
متن کاملResults from Seven Years of AMANDA-II
AMANDA is a first-generation high energy neutrino telescope, which has taken data at the South Pole in its final configuration since 2000. Results from seven years of operation are presented here, including observation of the atmopheric neutrino flux and searches for astrophysical neutrinos from cosmic ray accelerators, gamma ray bursts, and dark matter annihilations. In 2007, AMANDA was incorp...
متن کاملIceCube Observatory: Neutrinos and the Origin of Cosmic Rays
The completed IceCube Observatory, the first km neutrino telescope, is already providing the most stringent limits on the flux of high energy cosmic neutrinos from point-like and diffuse galactic and extra-galactic sources. The nondetection of extra-terrestrial neutrinos has important consequences on the origin of the cosmic rays. Here the current status of astrophysical neutrino searches, and ...
متن کاملFrom AMANDA to IceCube: Neutrino Astronomy at the South Pole
AMANDA at the South Pole has been the world’s largest high-energy neutrino telescope. It is now an integral part of the IceCube neutrino observatory presently under construction at the same location. A summary of the recent results from AMANDA is presented and a report on the first two construction seasons of the IceCube telescope is given.
